In 1958 British Motor Corporation launched a new, small sports car known as the Austin Healey Sprite. It was produced at the MG factory in Abington, England. The Sprite introduced a whole new concept in sports car ownership that was later be copied by Triumph and MG. The Sprite consisted of a twin carburetor 948cc engine driving the rear wheels via a four-speed gearbox. The body was of a simple design with no external boot access and with minimal decoration. The one-piece bonnet was originally designed to include pop-up headlamps, however the mechanisms proved too complex and so the lamps were mounted in a fixed pod. This unusual styling feature actually added to the cars “cute” appeal and it quickly gained the nickname “Frogeye” in England and “Bugeye” in the US. The Mark I Sprite was produced between 1958 and 1961. In total 49,000 cars were made.
These cars have been regular fixtures at SCAA racing and rallying events since their introduction. They are incredible fun to drive, handle like a dream and of course look great. They bring smiles to onlookers wherever they go!
